Specifications for Slip-On Tanker Units

Minimum Specifications

 All units must be complete, self-contained firefighting systems including a water tank, pump, motor, hoses, and mounting platform. Units must be designed for easy removal (e.g., via forklift blades or integral lifting points) and must not exceed the host vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) when fully loaded. No underside nuts/bolts; all water lines covered in non-slit corrugated loom; electrical functions operational only when master switch is ON.


1. Cab and Chassis Units (For Standard Vehicles, Excluding UTVs)


  • General Requirements:
    • Complete slip-on unit mounted on a platform for any vehicle (not UTVs).
    • Fully loaded weight ≤ host chassis GVWR.
    • All tubing with metal fittings rated to 500 PSI (no special tools required).
    • No underside nuts/bolts; non-slit corrugated loom on all water lines.
    • Electrical functions wired to master switch.


  • Pump Motor:
    • Driven by four-cycle gasoline or diesel-powered auxiliary air-cooled 4-cycle CARB-compliant electric start engine with backup recoil starter; fixed-mounted on rear and integrated into unit.
    • USFS-qualified spark arrestor on exhaust.
    • Fuel tank ≥2 gallons.
    • Low-pressure shutdown switch at manufacturer's recommended safe pressure.
    • Low oil protection.
    • All serviceable items (air filters, oil filters, drains, fuel pumps) accessible for routine maintenance.
    • Custom fabricated tread plate safety shield(s) to prevent injury/damage from moving parts.


  • Pump:
    • Capable of minimum performance from tank or 5-foot lift through 24 feet of 1.5-inch suction hose and strainer.
    • Same performance via tank-to-pump valve.
    • Self-adjusting mechanical pump seal.


  • Pump Certification:
    • Dry pump capable of suction/discharge per NFPA 1900 (previously 1906).
    • Tested at manufacturer's facility per NFPA 1901 conditions.
    • Delivers: 100% rated capacity at 150 PSI; 50 GPM at 100 PSI; 30 GPM at 150 PSI; 200 PSI shutoff pressure.
    • Minimum capacities measured at pump head.


2. UTV Units (Specifically for Utility Task Vehicles)


  • General Requirements:
    • Complete slip-on unit mounted on a platform for any UTV.
    • Fully loaded weight ≤ host chassis GVWR.
    • All tubing with metal fittings rated to 500 PSI (no special tools required).
    • No underside nuts/bolts; non-slit corrugated loom on all water lines.
    • Electrical functions wired to master switch.


  • Pump Motor:

Evaluation Criteria for Bids

 Bids will be evaluated based on:


  • Compliance with minimum specs (mandatory).
  • Cost competitiveness (lowest responsible bid preferred).
  • Delivery timeline and installation support.
  • Vendor experience with similar units for wildland firefighting.
  • Any value-added features (e.g., enhanced durability, extended warranty) that exceed minimum specs without increasing cost excessively.
