Oklahoma Forestry Services is providing grant funding is to help governments and groups across Oklahoma implement urban forestry projects that will provide lasting environmental, economic and social benefits for all Oklahomans. The Town of Davenport is taking steps to increase the community forest management.
The Town of Davenport is a small, historic Route 66 community in Lincoln County dedicated to enhancing quality of life, preserving community character, and improving public spaces for residents and visitors.
Through proactive planning and partnerships, the Town seeks to strengthen its community forest, increase resilience to extreme weather, and expand the environmental and health benefits of trees in key public areas.
North Park is one of Davenport’s primary public green spaces and a valued gathering place for residents and families. Its canopy is mature and visually impressive, yet the trees are largely the same age. This even-aged structure creates a significant community risk: a single severe storm could remove most or all of the canopy at once, leaving the park without shade, aesthetic quality, or the environmental benefits trees provide for years to come.
The project will deliver direct public benefits at two high-visibility community sites. At North Park, planting a younger generation of native trees will reduce the risk of total canopy loss from a single storm, preserve long-term shade for recreation and family gatherings, and improve air quality, stormwater management, and aesthetic quality for residents. At the Davenport Welcome Center, new trees will create the first canopy at a Route 66 gateway.
